National Geographic in the Back Yard

You may want to cover your children's eyes, my friends. Gratuitous nature channel stuff follows.

This morning, like any other morning, I made my coffee, opened the back door, and commenced my morning yoga practice. The girls ran outside to do their business, and I heard an awful squeaking, which I assumed was one of their squeaky balls. It got worse and the yoga breathing was becoming increasingly difficult. So I slipped on my moccasins and headed outside. An initial scan of the wooded back yard returned nothing, and then I started to look up, and there I saw it, two raccoons, high above us in a tree top, duking it out. Or so I thought. I grabbed my camera and telephoto lens, and the images I came away with tell a much different story.

It was not just a cat fight. Oh no, it was full-on raccoon porn fest going on in our backyard. Except, the victim was very upset, so I think it was not consentual.
The victim managed to escape her attacker and fled higher into the tree.
Meanwhile, the suspect decided to leave well enough alone and exited the tree (I guess I didn't realize that raccoons can scale trees?!)
Little did he know he was BUSTED! and captured forever on film.
Don't worry about us, however, we are all fine and have come through this ordeal unharmed. Although my poor girls are very upset and have been barking at the sky now for a while.

Yikes! You have a scary sexual predator in your neighborhood! Good thing you have his mug shot on hand!

I didn't know racoons could climb trees. Here's another fun fact- did you know that peacocks can fly and have nests in trees also?

Fun! I love wildlife in my own backyard! But they are pesty things, for sure. {I brought home a baby one when I was 4-5ish and my mom let me keep it. I loved that little guy! But he did get into everything...}

Ok, Steph... another similar fact... Turkeys also fly and perch in trees. Crazy site seeing the big blob of feathers in a tree! :)
